These cookies are authentic Sicilian biscotti, they are meant to be hard and dry for easy, long term storage in the arid land of Sicily.
There is no need for refrigeration even though there are no preservatives. Back in the “old days” there was no refrigeration and they also used less sugar because of sugar’s high cost back then.
This is a recipe handed down from my great grandmother,
Caterina Di Mare Sitra who was from Porto Empedocle, Sicily.
Since these biscotti are hand made they vary in size, shape, and color. Traditionally, the biscotti are dipped in sweet wine, but they are also delicious dipped in coffee, tea, or hot chocolate!
Ingredients: unbleached flour, eggs, sugar, almonds, anise seed, almond extract, baking powder.
